Race for the Cure Team Is Motivated to End Breast Cancer Forever

When Jen Lee Almeida’s best friend of almost 36 years, Maureen, was diagnosed with breast cancer, she quickly took action and formed a Race for the Cure team in honor of her friend.
“It was the least I could do when Maureen was diagnosed to help show that we were in this with her,” said Lee Almeida. “The first Race was just about a week after her double-mastectomy and her husband pushed her through the course in a wheelchair, with her bald head protected under a pink hat. She had to be there to show everyone she was going to fight to get better and fight for others to get better.”
Race for the Cure raises funds for the breast cancer movement, thanks to supporters and survivors in our local communities who step up and take action by fundraising for the cause.
“We started our team, Mo’s Maracas, for Maureen that same year she was diagnosed to help fight back against this disease,” said Lee Almeida.
“It is important to her, and all of our team members, to keep racing for the cure in honor of those who lost their battle, for those that still fight it, and to ensure our daughters and future granddaughters never have to face it.”
This is the team’s seventh consecutive year participating in Komen CSNJ’s Race for the Cure, and they are looking forward to another great event this year.
“I appreciate what Susan G Komen is doing to see that we find a cure. Awareness, education, research is all very important work that needs to be supported,” said Lee Almeida.
Event proceeds from Komen Central and South Jersey’s Race for the Cure support life-saving programs locally, offering breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment, as well as global research efforts to find the cures.
“I love being a team captain because it is an honor to represent my friend in this fight,” said Lee Almedia. “Our team may not always be the biggest, but we are unified in our love for Maureen on that day, and for our passion to find a cure!”
Together, we can make a difference. Join Jen and make an impact by starting a Race team and join us on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Six Flags Great Adventure.
