For the last two years, Manduka has partnered with Susan G. Komen to benefit our longstanding battle against breast cancer with the creation of project:OM. By bringing this incredible community together, we really can create a better world ONE MORE mat at a time.

project:OM’s purpose is to expand the knowledge and benefits of yoga and create awareness for how yoga can make the biggest difference on our health and the world as a whole.

Local project:OM Events

Project:OM events will be taking place in thousands of studios across the country — and we’re lucky to work with several great studios in the central and southern New Jersey area.

All the proceeds from these project:OM classes will benefit Susan G. Komen and our goal of reducing breast cancer-caused deaths by 50% by the year 2026.

Yoga + Breast Cancer

Yoga can benefit your mental and physical health. Yoga is often used to relieve stress, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and sleep troubles (insomnia). It can also be used to cope with physical pain such as headaches and lower back pain, and also for breathing problems such as asthma.

Studies have shown that doing yoga for about 12 weeks will improve the quality of life and emotional and social well-being of breast cancer patients. Some breast cancer patients use yoga to reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy. Doing up to 8 weeks of yoga can also decrease pain and tiredness in breast cancer patients.

Here is a story from a breast cancer survivor who found hope, love and release doing yoga:

Kathy Bressler is another strong breast cancer survivor that we had the pleasure of talking to about her journey fighting through. She had been interested in yoga for five years prior to being diagnosed with breast cancer, as she attended hot yoga classes about five days a week.

During her battle against breast cancer which included her 22 weeks of chemotherapy, five weeks of radiation and seven weeks in a hyperbaric chamber, she was told to stop practicing yoga. The reason being, she would always participate in hot yoga and there was a chance for dehydration during the class.

Kathy and her yoga family

Kathy is a registered nurse and felt it was the best decision for herself to continue practicing yoga even though she was told not to. After continuing doing what she loves during a time of struggle, she explain that:

“Yoga made me feel whole at a time that I was at the greatest potential to feel broken, I found an inner strength I never knew I had at a time that I was afraid I could no longer be strong. Yoga helped me prove to myself that I was strong and healthy, cancer hadn’t changed that, or defined who I was.”
